Tuition & Financial Aid
The Teaching Assistantship is provided by the department for students with excellent qualifications. Students interested in TA should complete a TA application form together with the program application.
The Research Assistantship is provided by individual professors. Interested students will be automatically considered for RAs by selecting "Research Assistantship" for financial aid in their application.
The Applied Research Center of Â鶹´«Ã½ has an immediate opening for a Graduate Research Assistantship to work in the area of ultrafast electron diffraction (UED).
The applicant must be interested in pursuing Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or Physics. The work is mainly experimental and requires operating amplified femtosecond lasers and ultrahigh vacuum systems.

The Applied Research Center of Â鶹´«Ã½ has an immediate opening for a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) to work in the area of laser instrument development for planetary surfaces and atmosphere characterization. Applicant must be a US citizen interested in pursuing MS or Ph.D.
The objective of this Research is to develop a combined Raman, Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF), and Laser Induced Breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Lidar receiver system; detect and identify geochemical and biochemical species to determine Venus, Europa, and Mars surface compositions and chemistry related to habitability. Acquire Raman, LIF, and LIBS spectra through Intensified Charge-Coupled Device (ICCD) camera by exciting with 532 nm laser, in addition to obtain elastic lidar data through Photomultiplier Tube (PMT) by exciting with the same 532 nm laser. Operation of the instrument in remote Raman, LIF, and LIBS spectroscopy approach will allow investigation of mineralogy, water-bearing minerals, biology and fluorescent trace elements, minor & major elements and biological materials in planetary surfaces, polar ices and gas hydrates; and lidar receiver will allow for mapping of planet surface, such as slopes, hills, and ice sheet, as well as atmospheric aerosols and clouds distribution. This remote sensing instrument consists of a pulsed laser, a 4-inch or 16.0-inch diameter telescope (depends on availability), and an integrated spectrograph onto a Lander or Orbital Platform for acquiring lidar return signals and Raman, LIF, and LIBS spectra. This work will advance this technology from laboratory demonstration to a prototype for flight missions and greatly enhance the probability of success for Mars Sample Return, Jupiter Europa Orbital/Lander and Venus in situ Explorer missions.
BS in engineering, physics, or chemistry and a strong interest in developing analytical instrumentations are required.
