STS Supports University Safety

The Security Technology Services Unit (STS) provides technological support and assistance to the Department of Public Safety (DPS). STS is responsible for supporting University computer systems and systems specific to the operations of the Public Safety Department. It is the mission of STS to provide the highest professional customer service to the Public Safety Department as possible. The services STS provides include: body camera management, car equipment, radios, computers, servers, switches, firewalls, and hardware/software inventory. STS ensures the DPS can be effective by providing the latest technology advances in the performance of all the department's mission. Issues will be handled through STS by contacting them at .

Security Technology Services also works with vendors to create the best solutions for the Public Safety Department. STS works with vendors for quotes that give the department the best price possible, ensures vendors meet the standards set by ITS for data protection and application security, works with procurement and University Counsel to ensure the contracts best protect the University, create all purchase orders for the project quote, and schedules the installation of services and training for administrators and end users.

Physical Security Assets

Security Technologies along with other departments can utilize access control systems to be able to control who can have access to buildings. A security review can be requested to the Physical Security Specialist to review door access protocol, performance, and install of access control devices. Access control for the Public Safety Department is managed by the Security Technologies Services at pssecuritytechnologyservices@odu.edu.

It is recommended that critical office areas, areas where confidential and HIPPA records are stored, cashiering points, and areas that handle money have a security alarm system. A Security Technology Services Division (STS) member will conduct a survey of the building or area to determine the need of the alarm system and the location of devices. For Installations and training for the alarm systems, STS will work with the vendor to define the best schedule. All alarm systems will first notify Â鶹´«Ã½PD Communications Center for dispatching the emergency services needed.

All alarm system installation, monitoring, and maintenance costs are the responsibility of the requesting organization or department. It is recommended that the requesting agency obtain a quote from the STS. STS can help by offering services such as: consultations, site surveys, assessments, and in assisting the requesting department in creating policies toward panic/duress alarms.

The University utilizes panic and duress buttons to provide safety for those in serious situations. The Panic alarm emit a silent alarm that is triggered and sends the call to the Â鶹´«Ã½ Police Department and from there an officer will dispatched to the area. Panic/Duress alarms will only be placed on the campus access control system and not be included in an alarm system. On a quarterly basis, the requesting department is responsible for testing the alarm for proper functionality.

Â鶹´«Ã½ utilizes intrusion systems to protect high value assets, computers, and art. With these systems in place, only authorized faculty, staff, students, and guests will be able to access University assets and property. In the event that unauthorized person(s) are on Â鶹´«Ã½ property, the Public Safety dispatch center will be notified. STS will work with the vendor to schedule the installation and training of the alarm system. It is the responsibility of the STS to maintain and manage these critical systems. The requesting department is responsible for testing the alarm system on a quarterly basis for proper functionality. All maintenance issues will be handled through STS by contacting them at pssecuritytechnologyservices@odu.edu.

Security reviews are a process used to identify the historical, current, and future security posture of area under review. Reviews will be completed using Community Policing Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles and ASIS International Guideline, Facilities Physical Security Measures, ASIS GDL FPSM-2009. Those individuals that have successfully completed a Basic CPTED Certification course will conduct reviews.
