Provost's Spotlight

The Provost's Spotlight series is a forum to highlight the accomplishments of Â鶹´«Ã½ faculty by offering the opportunity to speak with them about their scholarship, motivation, challenges, backgrounds, and personal interests. The Spotlight series uses a question-and-answer format to give the audience insight into our marvelous Â鶹´«Ã½ colleagues.

2024

Dr. Victoria Time

The spring 2024 Provost’s Spotlight honoredÌýVictoria Time, LL.B., Ph.D., M.S.Ìý.ÌýDr. Time is an international scholar born in Cameroon and educated in both Africa and the United States. She came to Â鶹´«Ã½ in 1997 where she has been recognized as an outstanding faculty member and professor of sociology and criminal justice. Dr. Time is a distinguished teacher who holds the title University Professor in recognition of excellence in teaching. In 2022-2023 she became a Fulbright Scholar and conducted research and taught at the University of Nairobi. Dr. Time has published three books, thirty-seven articles and book chapters, and she has presented her research on all continents except Antarctica. Dr. Time exemplifies what it means to be a scholar-teacher.

2023

Professor William Owings

The Spring 2023 Provost’s Spotlight honored ProfessorÌýWilliam Owings,ÌýDepartment of Educational Foundations & Leadership, who served 21 years at Â鶹´«Ã½ focused on teacher quality, principal quality, and finance and student achievement.ÌýDr. OwingsÌýcompleted a 50-year career in education in 2023, having served as a public-school teacher, high school principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent of schools. He is a distinguished Fellow of the National Education Finance Academy.

Dr. Yuping Liu-Thompkins

The Fall 2023 Provost's Spotlight honored Dr. Yuping Liu-Thompkins, Department of Marketing. Dr. Yuping Liu-Thompkins, a marketing expert, is the founder of Â鶹´«Ã½'s Loyalty Science Lab. The Loyalty Lab, which has 1,200 followers worldwide, conducts scientific research on brand and customer loyalty and collaborates with local companies. Dr. Liu-Thompkins has received numerous awards for her work, including the Strome College of Business Research Award. She has also been a visiting professor at several prestigious universities around the world, where she has gained valuable insights and experience. Dr. Liu-Thompkins is passionate about teaching and connecting with students and the business community.

Dr. Carolyn Rutledge

The Fall 2022 Provost's Spotlight honored Dr. Carolyn Rutledge professor,Ìýco-director for the Center for Telehealth Innovation, Education, and Research (C-TIER), associate chair, graduate program director in the School of Nursing and 2014 SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award Winner.

Dr. Nina Brown

The Provost’s Spotlight held on April 18, 2022 honored Dr. Nina Brown, Professor and Eminent Scholar in the Department of Counseling and Human Services in the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies. ÌýDr. Brown has taught at Â鶹´«Ã½ for over 54 years and has written nearly 40 books.

2021

Professor Lawrence Weinstein

Acclaimed Teacher, Honored at Nov. 1, 2021 Provost's SpotlightÌý|ÌýLawrence Weinstein, a professor of physics, University Professor and Eminent Scholar, was the guest of honor at the fall 2021 Provost's Spotlight, held Monday, Nov. 1, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the University Theatre. Dr. Weinstein is also a researcher at the Jefferson Lab. The Spotlight recorded event includes an introduction by Provost Augustine O. Agho and an interview conducted by CFD Director Annette Finley-Croswhite.

Dr. Khan Iftekharuddin

Dr. Khan Iftekharuddin is a Professor in Â鶹´«Ã½'s Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, and the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs in the Batten College of Engineering & Technology. He is also director of Â鶹´«Ã½'s Vision Lab. Join us for an amazing conversation about his work with artificial intelligence. March 2, 2021.

Dr. Luisa A. Igloria

Dr. Luisa A. Igloria, Louis I. Jaffe Endowed Professor, Professor of English and Creative Writing, University Professor, and Virginia's Poet Laureate (2020-2022) offers insight on her background, inspiration, and creative work at the September 2020 Provost's Spotlight. She also reads some of her poetry as part of the presentation.

Dr. Shaomin Li

Dr. Shaomin Li, Eminent Scholar and Professor of International Business, was born in Beijing and has had a long and successful career in the U.S. and at Â鶹´«Ã½ where he is the 2008 Outstanding Faculty Award Winner from (SCHEV). In this Provost's Spotlight, Dr. Li shares his business insight and scholarship and introduces us to some of his artistic work as well. (October 30, 2019).

Dr. Richard Heller

Dr. Richard Heller, Professor & Eminent Scholar in the Frank Reidy Center for Bioelectrics with the College of Health Sciences, offers insight into innovations in biomedical research and cancer treatment made during his outstanding career.

Dr. Helen Crompton

Dr. Helen Crompton, Associate Professor in the Department of Teaching & Learning and the 2018 SCHEV Rising Star awardee from Â鶹´«Ã½, discusses her work with mobile technologies. The United Nations has named Dr. Crompton one of nine mobile learning experts in the world.
