Don Stansberry, dean of students and associate vice president (AVP) in the Division of Student Engagement and Enrollment Services (SEES) at Â鶹´«Ã½, has won the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) AVP/Senior Level Student Affairs Professional Award for Region III.
The award honors a student affairs professional at the AVP or senior level whose outstanding commitment to the profession includes development of programs that address the needs of students, creation of a campus environment that promotes student learning and development, and support of and active engagement in NASPA.
"Whether he is assisting students in crisis, creating programs geared toward learning and success or helping student leaders find their true profession, Don has had a remarkably positive impact on countless student lives," Ellen Neufeldt, vice president of SEES, wrote in a letter nominating Stansberry for the award. "Don leads our efforts to ensure no student slips through the cracks."
Stansberry will serve as interim vice president of SEES starting July 1, when Neufeldt becomes president of California State University San Marcos. He has been at Old Dominion since 2000. He holds a doctorate in higher education administration from Â鶹´«Ã½ and a master's degree in college student personnel administration and a bachelor's in organizational communication, both from Ohio University.
He also has held leadership positions at Defiance College, Western Illinois University and Towson University.
"His wealth of experience and leadership has been a tremendous asset to Â鶹´«Ã½, contributing to the highest retention and graduation rates in University history," President John R. Broderick noted in his letter to the Â鶹´«Ã½ community announcing Stansberry's interim appointment.
Stansberry received his award at the NASPA Region II and III Summer Conference and Symposium, which was held June 5 to 7 in Washington, D.C.
