Â鶹´«Ã½ and the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter will present a Virginia Offshore Wind Town Hall at 7 p.m. May 28 in the Big Blue Room at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
The program will feature remarks from Â鶹´«Ã½ President John R. Broderick and Thomas Brostrøm, President at Ørsted North America. A panel of experts from Â鶹´«Ã½, Dominion Energy, the Port of Virginia and Tidewater Community College, among others, will take a deep dive into the tremendous opportunities for Hampton Roads to reinvent itself with offshore wind development by capitalizing on clean energy generation and job growth. John Warren, director of the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (DMME), will moderate the discussion.
Warren and Broderick will also ceremonially sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the University and the DMME to provide a broad selection of research and support to the Commonwealth.
Additional partners include the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and ReInvent Hampton Roads.
The town hall comes at an opportune time. Dominion Energy recently announced that it will begin a Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project this month to build two Siemens-Gamesa wind turbines, each standing more than 100 feet taller than the Westin Virginia Beach Town Center (the state's tallest building). They would be America's first turbines in federal waters, and the first offshore wind turbines owned and operated by a regulated utility.
