Â鶹´«Ã½ in collaboration with the City of Norfolk has announced plans to install new turf at the Powhatan Fields on Old Dominion's campus.

The Powhatan Fields were built in 2004.

At the time Â鶹´«Ã½, Norfolk Public Schools and the City of Norfolk signed a joint agreement establishing shared access for high school and middle school sports teams along with University recreational clubs.

With the development of Â鶹´«Ã½'s sports programs and additional training facilities, Powhatan Fields are now used almost exclusively by the City of Norfolk.

At the recent expiration of the original contract, Â鶹´«Ã½ extended the agreement another 20 years, ensuring youth sport teams continued access to the fields.

After years of use, however, the fields were in need of resurfacing.

Old Dominion and the City of Norfolk will divide the cost of the new, state-of-the-art turf; the City of Norfolk will pay for the continued maintenance of the fields.

"The Powhatan Field project illustrates our strong partnership with the City of Norfolk, Mayor Alexander and our commitment to enriching the lives of children in our community," Old Dominion President John R. Broderick said. "We look forward to providing a venue for youth athletic games for many years to come."
