Title: Creating Resilient Futures: Building Social, Natural, and Physical Capitals in Coastal Communities
Ìý
Abstract
This seminar explores a research approach to building resilience in coastal communities facing climate change impacts by integrating natural, built, and social assets. The research emphasizes co-creation, where community-identified assets and bottom-up planning converge with expert hydrologic modeling to develop sustainable solutions to coastal flooding. Research discussed will be from two communities in Virginia, one a rural community along the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and the other the urban landscape of Norfolk, VA. I will primarily focus my talk on storm impacts and flooding in coastal communities, utilizing nature-based solutions to coastal protection. Although still a work in progress, theÌýresearch aims to address three objectives: enhancing community engagement, co-developing stormwater management, and assessing the community benefits of this approach.Ìý

Biography
Matt Reidenbach is a professor and Chair of the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia. HisÌýprimary area of research is coastal oceanography, with an emphasis on how hydrodynamics impact marine organisms and their ecosystems. His current research includes the effects of flow and turbulence on nutrient exchange in coral reefs, larval transport in estuaries, chemical dispersion in the ocean, and wave dynamics. Additionally, he investigates coastal resilience and nature-based solutions for coastal protection. He obtained his B.S. from Cornell University and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University, within the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering.Ìý
