Assistant Professor of Literacy Dr. Judith Dunkerly-Bean and her husband Tom Bean have dedicated their summer to volunteering at the William A. Hunton YMCA, located in Tidewater Gardens, Norfolk, Virginia. The Hunton is the nation's oldest African American YMCA and has played an essential role in the community since 1875 by providing child care before and after school, summer programs for children, as well as other services.

Although the Hunton YMCA is slated for demolition due to the redevelopment of Tidewater Gardens, Dr. Bean and her husband will continue to volunteer there, touching the lives of so many children, while impacting their lives as well.
